The key to a successful QR code campaign is to give customers a clear idea why they should scan your QR code. One of the unique features of pbSmart™ Codes is that you can provide this information using an image or graphic overlaid onto the QR code itself. QR codes with images embedded into the design are called “Custom QR Codes”.

This article explains Custom QR Codes in more detail, helping you understand what they are, what they look like and how they can be used to make your QR code campaigns more effective. To find out how to create a Custom QR Code, see our related article on how to create a custom QR code.

What is a Custom QR Code?

A Custom QR Code, also known as a designer QR code is a QR code with an image placed within the QR code pattern. Custom QR Codes are available with pbSmart™ Codes plans “Standard” and above. To create a Custom QR Code, you can chose from one of the many images provided in the pbSmart Codes image library, or upload an image that you create yourself. A branded QR code is actually a specific type of Custom QR code that primarily focuses on promoting your personal or professional brand. Like branded QR codes, pbSmart Codes’ Custom QR codes provide several placement options for the images, including in the center of the QR code, in the bottom right or spread across the QR code.

The following images show examples of Custom QR Codes, as well as a standard QR code for comparison.

How can I use Custom QR Codes?

Custom QR Codes or designer QR codes, not only add style to your QR code - helping them stand out from the crowd - they can be used to convey information and tips to make your QR campaign more effective.

Custom QR Codes can include:

  • An image containing call-to-action text that encourages customers to scan your code
  • A photo of the item you are giving away, like a travel mug, t-shirt or baseball cap
  • A coupon-style image with text to show the amount of the discount on offer
  • An image of the product you'll be providing more information about
  • An icon showing what kind of information or action the code offers, like a map or an email icon

As these examples show, Custom QR Codes provide unlimited possibilities for your marketing campaigns.

No matter how you decide to use Custom QR Codes, you are sure to increase the number of scans for your campaign. When customers know what to expect , they are much more likely to scan your QR code. In an increasingly competitive marketplace, Custom QR Codes gives you an edge over your competitors and maximizes the results from your QR campaign.
